Understanding Your Contact Lens Comfort

Perhaps more importantly than any part of your body, the way something fits on your eyes is imperative for comfort. At York Mills Eye Care, we take a full-service approach to your contact lens selection. Finding the perfect contact lens begins with an eye exam and goes beyond a simple prescription.

Contact lenses sit directly on your eye, so we need to know the shape of your cornea and confirm your eyes are suitable for contact lens use. Whether you wear contact lenses as an alternative to eyeglasses or they’re your full-time corrective solution, make sure you’re tested for the right prescription and fitted for the right lens shape.

We offer a variety of contact lens products including dry eye drops suitable for your contact lenses and also dry eye therapy.

What Happens During a Contact Lens Exam & Fitting?

Before committing to a supply of contact lenses, we want to make sure they are healthy for your eyes and feel comfortable. Setting up a contact lens exam and fitting is the first step to seeing clearly and safely without needing eyeglasses. Our contact lens process is designed to make your lens choice a successful one:

  1. A comprehensive eye exam determines your contact lens prescription, which may be different than your spectacle prescription.
  2. A contact lens fitting helps determine how a lens rests on your eyes. This is important for patients with astigmatism.
  3. A trial period gives you a chance to try your lenses in your real-life environment after deciding what lenses make sense for you.
  4. A follow-up exam makes sure we are seeing expected improvements in your vision. If the lenses don’t provide you with your ideal vision and comfort, we’ll try another selection.

Types of Contact Lenses Offered at York Mills Eye Care

York Mills Eye Care partners with several manufacturers to offer the right type of contact lenses for various vision needs. Please talk with our optometrist if you’re interested in a specific product.

Soft Lenses

Soft contact lenses are ideal for patients with few prescription complications. Soft contacts come in a variety of disposal formats, including daily, weekly, and monthly.

Rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lenses are hard lenses and are more durable than soft lenses. These lenses are designed to last longer and rarely tear but are considered less comfortable by some.

Patients with astigmatism benefit from using toric lenses. These lenses have varying powers at each axis, which correlates to the unique prescription of an astigmatic eye. Toric lenses are usually weighted to sit in a specific orientation on the eye.

Recent advances in contact lens technology can help prevent digital eye strain. These lenses block blue light waves emitted from electronic screens. Artificial blue light can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to difficulty falling asleep and daytime fatigue.

Multifocal contact lenses have multiple prescriptions layered from top to bottom. They’re most often recommended for those with presbyopia since they allow for different corrections at varying distances.

Order Contacts

We Recycle Contacts!

Did you know 290+ million contacts end up in Canadian landfills or waterways every year?
Let’s change how we treat our planet. Take Part in the Change Here:

How it works

1. Locate the nearest participating Eye Care Professional. (That’s US “York Mills Eye Care”)
2. Collect your discarded lenses and blister packs in any re-usable or single use container/bag.
3. Drop off your collected waste at your selected Eye Care Professional’s office.
4. Start again! Repeat the cycle and begin collecting again.

Are Contacts the Right Choice?

Contact lens exams and fittings do more than just determine your prescription and measure your eye shape. Exams also ensure your eye is ready for daily contact lens wear. Some pre-existing eye conditions or environmental issues may impact your contact lens comfort. When lenses are worn incorrectly or are not the right fit, contacts can lead to serious eye infections.

York Mills Eye Care is your contact lens partner from initial testing until you receive your new supply of new lenses. Start to finish, we make your visual health and visual comfort our priority.
