Symptoms of Dry Eye

Dry eyes may just be temporary. But if you’re consistently experiencing dry eye symptoms, it’s best to consult our practice for a treatment plan. Some signs that may indicate you may have chronic dry eyes are:

  • Blurred vision
  • Burning or gritty eyes
  • Eye fatigue
  • Watery or teary eyes
  • Eye & eyelid redness
  • Puffy or swollen eyes
  • Eye pain

Causes of Dry Eye Syndrome

Common Causes of Dry Eye

Dry eye occurs when your eyes are under-lubricated with insufficient tears. Your tear film may be negatively influenced by one of the following conditions:

Our tears have 3 specific layers that must each function to keep our eyes moist and free of bacteria. A balance of all 3 layers is necessary to keep our eyes sufficiently lubricated:

  • Outer lipid (oil) layer to slow down evaporation and keep the eye’s surface smooth.
  • Middle aqueous (water) layer to hydrate the eye and deliver nutrients.
  • Inner mucin (mucous) layer to keep the tears sticking to the eyeball.

Dry Eye Treatment

Even though dry eye syndrome is becoming a more prominent eye condition in North America, it doesn’t mean you need to settle with the symptoms. York Mills Eye Care provides various dry eye treatments that can help relieve irritated, swollen, red eyes.

Artificial Tears

Often the first step in dry eye relief is applying artificial tears. Remember that not all artificial tears are created equal. If you are using eye drops consistently, a preservative-free choice will benefit your eyes in the long run. Many people experience irritation when using eye drops containing preservatives over a long period.

We recommend HYLO EYE CARE® preservative and phosphate-free eye lubrication.

Medicated eye drops are a prescription product for treating dry eyes. These drops aim to suppress inflammation that causes dry eyes. An optometrist must examine your eyes to determine if this is a viable solution for your ocular health. When using medicated drops, it’s important to follow dosage instructions.

Hypochlorous acid is a common disinfectant with a variety of medical uses. A pure hypochlorous all-natural disinfectant is antimicrobial and can lower the bacterial load in an irritated eye. Following an eye exam, our optometrist may recommend this treatment for dry eye syndrome and will provide instructions for use.
