Myopia Control & Management in North York

An Increasing Condition

Also known as nearsightedness, myopia is a refractive error that commonly develops in younger people between the ages of 6 and 18. Myopia occurs when the eye grows and changes shape, incorrectly refracting light to the retina. Those with myopia have difficulty focusing on faraway objects.

Myopia is becoming more common in North America. Our team at York Mills Eye Care is aware of this trend. Our children’s eye exams place special attention on evaluating myopia. Because myopia comes with several health risks, researchers are investigating ways to help slow down its progression.

Causes & Symptoms of Myopia

The Causes

Nearly 30% of Canadians are affected by myopia. Myopia often occurs naturally as a hereditary condition, but other factors can contribute:

  • Near-vision work like heavy reading or time on a computer
  • Night time conditions that make focusing more difficult

The most obvious symptom of nearsightedness is an inability to focus on faraway objects. In other words, weak long-distance vision. But other more subtle signs may include:

  • Constant squinting
  • Perpetual headaches and eye fatigue
  • Eye pain
  • Short attention span
  • Losing place when reading

Controlling Myopia with ZEISS

Although there’s no cure for myopia, there are effective methods available that can slow its progression. York Mills Eye Care looks for myopia during all children’s eye examinations. If we determine your child is showing symptoms, we can explore myopia control.

ZEISS MyoVision® Pro Lenses

ZEISS has developed spectacle lenses that aim to slow myopia while also correcting refractive errors. Studies have shown less myopia progression with the use of specific specialty eyeglass lenses. ZEISS MyoVision® Pro Lenses use peripheral defocus management to slow the rate of myopia in the wearer.

If your child has myopia, please book an appointment with our clinic. Our optometrist can determine the severity of your child’s myopia and discuss the best options for corrective or controlling eyewear.
